Quick Float on the New - July 27th, 2013

Brad and I floated from the dam to the first take out. We caught 10 and 7 respectively on g-tails. They were running 4 gates and the fast moving water kept the float time down to about 2 hours of fishing time. We caught some really good sized fish for this time of year in the 1 to 1.5lbs range. The high water had a heavy stain color to it.

Bluegills on Bluestone - July 26th, 2013

Brad and I fished the Stone on a nice September like cool July evening. We struggled to catch gills at a rate that we are used to a Bluestone. We ended up with 45 fish in 2.5 hours of fishing and maybe a half dozen good sized bluegills. Lots of mayflies but we were unable to get the fish to hit a fly rod for some reason.

Independence Day on the Greenbrier - July 4th, 2013

Brad and I floated 6 miles from Pence Springs to Talcott between 6am and 11pm. Brad caught 21 and I landed 10. G-tails produced the best, but the low clear water made the fish a tad skiddish. We saw a couple nice bass and I had about a 3 pounder miss on a fluke. Most of the fish we caught were 8 to 12 inches. The cool overcast morning gave way to a sunny afternoon.

Falling Water and Hard to Find Fish - July 3rd, 2013

JRock and I fished the Stone from 9am to 1pm with very little to show for it. We landed a few bluegills and a smaller bass or two. It was a nice overcast day to be on the water but the Corps had pulled about 5 feet of water off the lake. The falling water made for some tough fishing conditons.

6 MIles on The Greenbrier - June 24th

Dusty and I floated from Pence Springs to Talcott on a nice overcast morning. We floated six miles for 6:30am til noon. We landed 25 fish a each. The fish came off of g  tials, KVD squarebills, and rebel crawls. I did catch a couple nicer fish on flukes...including one that weighed 3lbs. 9 oz.  We landed mnay smaller fish and redeyes but we had many keeper sized smallies and a couple in the high ones or two pound range. It was a nice float. The spring river bite is slowing some what due to hot summer temps. Days like these may be few and far between in the near future.

Family Farm Pond Fun - June 10th, 2013

Friends, kids, farm pond, bass, bluegills, a grill, and some awsome weather in beautiful country....life doesn't get much better. Spingtime in West Virginia is a special place. The pictures do all the explaining.

Cloudy With a Chance of Crappies - June 6th, 2013

Annalyn and I fished Bluestone Lake for 2 and a half hours today. The heavy overcast between rain showers made for not only a comfortable day to be outside but also turned the crappie on. We landed 27 fish on inline spinners up shallow, 21 of them were nice sized crappies up shallow in less than 3 feet of water. We caught 4 or so gills and a few more bass as well. I hooked and lost 2 nice bass in the 2 lbs. range. Black spinners with gold blade in the slightly stained water seemed to ge the trick.

New River Morning - June 1st, 2013

The elusive Charlie Lilly

JRod with a nice Smallie

JRod and I fished from the dam to the first bridge from 6:30 to 10am. We caught 25 smallies total. Jarod had the two nicest ones of the day. We ran it to a Charlie Lilly at daylight. Most of our fish came off G-tails. We did catch a few off of hard baits, but the grass is getting to thick for them to work in many places. It was  a great morning to be on the water before it gets hot and everybody shows up to start molesting the fish.

The Three Stoogies on Bluestone - May 31st, 2013

Jarod, Charlie, and I launched the Stratos outta Bertha since the launch ramp was closed due to Boat Race practice. It took forever to get there. There were very few people on the lake since the main ramp was blocked. It was a bright sunny day and there were a lot of small fish up shallow. The water was 72 degrees. We didn't get underway until about 10am and had to be off the water by 1:30pm. We had a fun day cutting up and carrying on and we even managed to catch a few fish.  We landed some big spawning bluegills, crappie up shallow, and a few bass. The biggest bass was 16 inches and our total for the day was around 30 fish between the three of us.

Annalyn's Day on The Lake - May 28th, 2013

Annalyn and I headed to Bluestone for a little fishing and lunch. I made the casts that hooked the fish and she did the giggling and reeling them in. She ended up catchin 10 fish total (2 nice bass, 5 crappie and 2 big bull bluegills). We had a heck of a fine day on the water. It's a fun time to beat in a day on Bluestone when the bass, crappie and pre spawn bluegills all are up shallow.

Memorial Day on the Greenbrier - May 27th, 2013

Brad, Brian, and I floated from Pence Spring to Talcott on the Greenbrier River. The water although falling was at a perfect level. It was post cold front and the end of a busy fishing weekend but despite these challenges Brad and I managed to land 20 and 26 fish repectively, Brian didn't fish just floated (who knows why). Most of our fish came off of hard crankbaits, Rebel Craw and KVD 1.0. We had 8 fish over a pound but none that would breach the 2 pound mark. A lot of our fish were small guys.  It was  a really great day to be ont the river with friends. I have lived along the Greenbrier most of my life. The problem with the Greenbier is that it often is either high and muddy or extremely low since it doesn't have a dam on it. Despite this it is a largely overlooked resource that lives in the shadow of the mighty New river.

1st Cast Bass - May 23rd, 2013

Ballard and I fished small spinners and cranks on the Stone form 10am to 2pm. We landed a wide variety of species(spotted bas, smallies, large mouth bass, crappie, bluegills) and  about 20 total fish in our 4 hours on the water.  Ballard caugtht a spotted bass on his very first cast on a g tail. It was a nice day to be on the water. We missed several more bites and lost several more fish. Hardly anybody fishing today but that is sure to change with the holiday weekend on it's way.
