Gun Dog - October 14th, 2013

Black faced fox squack

A warm fall day was spent in Monroe county chasing a mix of fox squirrels and greys with Sally. The squacks were holding tight and were not moving around much most likely due to the 70 degree temps. There are still a lot of leaves on the trees which made finding the game tough and at times hitting squacks even tougher. Derrick and I fired a combined 12 times to kill two squirrels one one single tree. If I would have heard all that quick shooting off from a distance....I would have had to wonder if those weren't two people shooting at each other. I was a fine day to spend in the woods and I enjoyed it a lot. If you have never hunted with a squrriel dog you need to give it a try if you get a chance, it is a ton of fun.

Friends Fall Accomplishments - October 13, 2013

Congrats to Sgt. Jones for this bear bow kill that he killed off his home property.

Congrats to Pastor James Leslie for this good looking early season buck bow kill.

15 Minute Fall Turkey - October 12, 2013

I headed up to Mouth of Indian Creek wildlife management area before daylight for the 1st day of fall turkey season. There were a lot of other hunters car in the area so I headed a little further in than I normally might have. I got a spot I had hunted before and pulled over. As I was loadig my shotgun when I heard turkey talk not 75 yards away on the river's edge. "Nothing is ever this easy" I thought to myself. I put on gloves and a facemask and started stalking that way. The first bird that flew down was 40 yards away. I put the speed dot on her neck and pulled the trigger with my Mossberg 835 and down she went. The other 20 odd turkeys went nuts. It would been really easy to kill another had a second hunter been present.

Saturday Morning Float - October 5th, 2013

Brad and I floated from the dam to the first take out over 3 hours. I caught 12 and Brad caught 9. The water was still warm enough not to need waders and the fish bite was slow. We got a lot of half hearted hits. The fog hung heavy on the river valley until after we got off the water at 10am.

New River Largemoutth - October 2nd, 2013

Brad and I fished the last hour of daylight below the dam. We caught 12 fish total. I caught a good sized LMB and Brad hooked and wrestled with a 10 pound carp for ahwile before the hook pulled loose. The fishing was slow but the two big fish fights made the trip worth making.
